Meet Dr. Ellen Kappus!

Santiago, Chile 2025  US State Department English Specialist working with the Chilean Ministry of Education

Dr. Ellen Kappus combined her years of teaching English as a Second language, beginning at New York University for 10 years, followed by 20 years in public school education. During her public school teaching years she was awarded National Board Certification in ESOL and earned a  doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on literacy from the University of Wyoming. 

She is an invited presenter at The Reading League and other national and international conferences, providing attendees with the tools to implement evidence-based vocabulary instruction. Her training focuses on explicit language instruction aligned to the science of learning.

Ellen continues to teach English as a second language, building more and more vocabulary image cards, as a Wyoming IET Grant manager preparing adult English learners for careers in nursing and the hotel and restaurant industries. She also creates research-informed professional development seminars, both online and face to face, for teachers and other education professionals.

Her goal is to help educators implement vocabulary instruction and linguistic practices with engaging tools and strategies that are based upon scientific consensus as to what constitutes best practice.
